Goat qualifications Explained

On this page there are explanations to the abbreviations used for goat qualifications.

BGS = British Goat Society

The following prefixes are awarded to goats competing at open shows (all breeds) recognised by the BGS.

* = When 18 points or more are awarded at a 24 hour milking competition - subject to butterfat % being not less than 3.25% at each milking.

Q = When 20 points or more are awarded at a 24 hour milking competition - butterfats being not less than 4% at each milking. Milk yield not less than 4.5kg in less than 365 days, or 4kg over 365 days. Female progeny when qualifying for a * or Q will become *1 or Q*1 - grand daughter *2 or Q*2 etc.

R = A milk recording award. Goats must yield 1000kg or more in 365 days or less. Butterfat not less than 3%
R105 = 1050kgs minimum. R140 = 1400kgs minimum.

RM = Register of Merit milk recording award. The goat and it's Dam must yield not less than 1300kgs in a lactation.

AR = Advanced Register Prefix. A goat must have yielded 1600kgs or more with butterfat % not less than 3.5%. Also the Dam must be RM or AR, and the sire of the goat must be out of a goat so registered,

= Dagger prefix, a registered male goat whose Dam and Sire's Dam both have * or Q status.

§ = Section Mark prefix, a registered male goat whose Dam and Sire's Dam are entitled to be R prefix.

§§ = A registered male goat whose Dam is RM or AR and whose Sire is entitled to § or §§ and out of a Dam entered in RM or AR.

SM = A registered male who has sired five daughters gaining either *, Q, AR, RM, or R awards.

CC = Challenge Certificates. Male goats require three from three different judges. They must have also sired three daughters with either *, Q, AR, RM or R status. Female goats require three from three different judges and must have 18 points or more in the milking competition. she must also have a Q* and hold three Inspection - Production Challenge Certificates (see below). Male and female goats obtaining this become champions, CH prefix.

BrCh = Breed Champion. Male goat with four breed challenge certificates from three different judges. They must also have sired a daughter with either * or Q. Female goat to have won five under three different judges and gained not less than 16 points in the milking competition at the same time.

IPCC = Inspection - Production Certificates. This award is based on the points awarded in a milking competition and on inspection.
